Thursday 3/4/2010

2:15-3:00 Leveraging a Learning Content Management Strategy to Enable Outcome-Based Instruction

Thomas Squeo, VP, Strategic Development, Roundbox Global

As Learning Ecosystem components are introduced to an institution or organization’s learning, talent or human capital management strategy, a learning content management-driven approach can provide the organization increased flexibility, reduce vendor lock-in and enable rapid on-boarding of new client technologies and modalities.

By disaggregating content using granular addressability concepts we can increase the ROI associated with content acquisition, reuse and reinterpretation for norm, accelerated and remedial learners with minimal additional investment.

Please join us in the dynamic presentation discussing the approaches, considerations and easily avoided pitfalls that can affect the adoption of an effective LCMS strategy.

Roundbox Establishes Strategic Education Technology Consulting Practice

In order to meet the continued and evolving demands of our clients and capture emergent opportunities, Roundbox Global has established a Strategic Education Technology line of business.  This line of business will be led by Thomas Squeo, VP Strategic Development.  This role and group will focus on optimizing customer technology portfolios while aligning initiatives to core business strategy.

Strategy that happens organically will fail.  To avoid this, Roundbox Global has developed a practice discipline that maps people, process and technology to the realities of the education enterprise capable of ensuring near, mid and long term goals and objectives are met through aligned and executed engagements while delivering measurable positive business impact.

In an environment that is highly variable, opportunities for; efficiency, cost of sales improvement and innovation emerge, ebb and flow with a speed unlike any other component of the business and institutional environment. These opportunities and challenges when dealt with in an ad hoc manner result in redundant spending, increased integration challenges and sometimes insurmountable exit costs that result in missed market opportunities, loss of revenue, and industry credibility.  Independent of the position in the education value chain, Roundbox has the ability to support the most complex challenges ranging from existing portfolio optimization, business process assessment and design, market scanning and recommendation, to technology innovation strategy and open source software utilization.

Education and traditional technology leaders are consistently called upon to establish architectural frameworks that deliver on today’s needs and are sufficiently sturdy to withstand the inevitable onslaught of future, yet unknowable requirements.  Roundbox Global supports our clients with deep industry expertise and enterprise architecture experience to understand and articulate emergent and existing business needs while aligning current and planned technology investments with these needs.

Our core Education Technology Strategy practice include:
* Strategic Technology Planning, Roadmap &Implementation
* Business, Information, Application & Technology Architectures
* Technology & Application Architecture Assessment & Vetting
* Vendor, Product & Package – RFP Development & Selection Facilitation
* Human Capital Management, Education Portfolio Assessment & Optimization

Dean Velez Puts on Quite a Show

I’ve been running the Adobe User Group of Atlanta for a few years and one topic has always eluded our group: After Effects, Adobe’s motion graphics tool that professionals cite as one of the tools they tend to use in every project every day. It’s not as if I did not try to find a presenter. With Turner, CNN and Crawford (among others), Atlanta is loaded with motion graphic and video professionals. It seems that these professionals are often very busy, work odd hours and are introverted — the anti-presenter triple threat.

I had never met Dean Velez, so he was sort of a mystery to me. He came highly recommended to me by more than a few trainers, so I figured a call and email would test the waters, to see if he would care to present at our user group event. He agreed.

At last night’s  meeting, Dean Velez proved that he is a total After Effects Rock Star.

We had a great crowd of students, professionals and newbies all hanging on Dean’s every word. Dean began by explaining that he is often extremely nervous when speaking in front of an audience, then proved to us he has beaten that fear by telling us his professional history and giving unsolicited (and great) advice to those just starting in the motion graphics business as well as those who are considering working as freelancers.

“Get a job first before you think of going freelance.” Dean said to the students in attendance. “You need a place to figure out how the business works before you take on the extra challenges of freelancing.”

Dean told freelancers that “Freelancers should ask for payment in thirds — a third at the beginning, a third at delivery of story boards, and a third at delivery. If the client refuses to do that then you should say ‘No’ because you may get ripped off.” Sage advice from a proven veteran.

Then, Dean mentioned in passing, that he had only begun creating his presentation that day — an admission that in the past has made many a user group manager (and attendee) want to throttle the presenter. Yet, based on Dean’s confidence and obvious skill (he showed us a rendered video of his progress before he began showing us After Effects), I knew that we were going to be in for an entertaining and educational evening.

Dean presented a 3D fly-through of an aquarium. Imagine the complexity of an environment of 2D graphics (including a couple of Easter Island heads), the illusion of depth and density and the effect of light shining through from the surface. Complex, yes, but Dean guided the audience through with style and ease showing filters and adjustment layers, tips and tricks.

During the questions and answers part of presentation, Dean was asked about how to get a specific effect and demonstrated how to create that effect over a three minute period while explaining his preferences in computer hardware specification. Simply amazing.

Special thanks to everyone who attended. One of the reasons Roundbox Global and I create these events is to inspire our community. Dean Velez fit the bill.

Roundbox Global Launches New Back-End for Student Information Management System (SIMS)

Open source EduCloud application will contribute to RBX Learning Ecosystem and other net-centric software solutions

Atlanta, GA – April 8, 2009 – Atlanta-based education technology and professional services consultancy Roundbox Global announced the development of its EduCloud SIMS back-end application, intended for use by educational establishments for management of student data.

The system supports the aggregation of business logic, object relationships, and a database schema into a single deployable solution, allowing users to manage student data across a variety of net-centric software solutions. The back-end is currently being used for a number of Learning Management System (LMS) products developed by Roundbox Global, and can contribute to large educational institutional systems requiring enterprise, comprehensive solutions for role management, user management, school management, classroom management and activities management. Future releases of the application will include attendance management enhancements, discipline record management and reporting, events management, healthcare/medical file management, schedule generation and group management.

“The EduCloud SIMS system represents an important component of a digital education ecosystem. We built a SIMS solution that is out-of-the-box developed to integrate and enhance the entire enterprise of digital educational solutions,” said Justin Beals, Roundbox Global’s Executive Vice President of Education.

Roundbox Global developed the SIMS back-end using Java within a Spring framework, and integrating technologies such as Hibernate, JPA, Cxf, Jsp, Dozer, Jaxb, Velocity and Slf4j. Designed as a multi-tier system, the application follows the three-tier architecture of J2EE and all its benefits (simplicity, scalability, flexibility and robustness).

The EduCloud source code is available for free download from SourceForge.net, at https://sourceforge.net/projects/educloudsims/. Additional documentation is available from the EduCloud website at http://educloudsims.wordpress.com/
